HHMS Endeavour: Maori burn Union Jacks in row over Captain Cook. Maori protesters lit fires to show their opposition to a recreation of Captain James Cook’s arrival on New Zealand soil 250 years ago.Thousands of people gathered in Gisborne on the North Island’s east coast yesterday to watch a flotilla led by a traditional Maori war canoe escort a replica of HMS Endeavour into Poverty Bay where Cook and his men became the first Europeans to land on October 8, 1769. Captain Cook’s ship sails into Maori protest.

Although the recreation was greeted warmly by many, the simulated landing was opposed by some Maori who associate Cook’s arrival with loss of life and their land during the subsequent British colonisation of the country.

Frank Allica, the Captain of the HMB Endeavour replica, is welcomed ashore. Several Maori were killed by Cook’s men in skirmishes that quickly erupted after he landed.
