Maduro regime in disarray as Venezuelan military envoy to United States defects.
The Venezuelan regime showed signs of disarray yesterday after its most senior military envoy in Washington announced he was defecting, and Mike Pompeo called on the world to “pick a side” in the escalating political crisis.“Either you stand with the forces of freedom or you’re in league with him and his mayhem,” the United State secretary of state told the United Nations security council. “End this nightmare. No excuses.”
Last week Juan Guaidó, the elected head of Venezuela’s parliament, declared himself the legitimate president of the nation, on the basis that Nicolás Maduro had usurped power after widely discredited elections. The United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany were among the nations expressing support for him at the UN, with Russia and China backing Mr Maduro.
