New children’s laureate Cressida Cowell pledges to help poorest discover ‘magic of reading’.

CCressida Cowell, the author best known for her stories about a young Viking on daunting quests, has decided to embark on a mission of her own to give the poorest children a chance to access the magic of reading.

The writer of the How to Train Your Dragon books, which have been adapted into a series of films starring Jay Baruchel and featuring Gerard Butler and David Tennant, was announced today as the new children’s laureate, a national champion of children’s reading.

Cowell, 53, said in a speech at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre in London that she was going to campaign for a change in the law to require all schools to have libraries. She also wants children to be allowed to explore their creativity.
