This is our election, Taiwan tells China.

Nationalists fear more intimidation by Beijing if president wins second term.

PPresident Tsai,  is campaigning to resist diplomatic and economic pressure from China.Taiwan has warned that defeat for Beijing’s candidates in its presidential election could prompt greater Chinese “military intimidation and diplomatic isolation” of the self-ruled island. “This is our own election,” the foreign minister Joseph Wu said today on the penultimate day of campaigning. “This is not China’s election. It is Taiwanese people who go to the voting booth to make a judgment on which candidate or political party is better for them. If China wants to play with democracies in other countries so much, maybe they can try with their own elections at some point.”

Mr Wu said that defeat for Chinese-backed candidates would lead to the “likely scenario” where Beijing would “engage in military intimidation or diplomatic isolation or using economic measures as punishment.
