Fast radio bursts from space shed light on cosmic mystery.

HHalf a billion light years away, in a spiral galaxy similar to our own Milky Way, a powerful radio source is blinking like a beacon. Nothing quite like it has been seen before and, as scientists scrutinize its origins, they believe that it might help to solve one of the cosmos’s most intriguing mysteries. The source emits vast pulses of energy, each lasting for less than two thousandths of a second, about once an hour for four days. It then falls silent for 12 days before the cycle begins again.

It is the first time that scientists have found a so-called fast radio burst (FRB) — one of the most enigmatic phenomena in the universe — that repeats itself predictably.
