Kirk Douglas obituary.

Actor best known for Spartacus who enjoyed a philandering youth but in later life returned to his Jewish faith and philanthropy.

I“I’m probably the most disliked actor in Hollywood,” Kirk Douglas noted proudly at the height of his success and fame. “And I feel pretty good about it because that’s me. I’m a pretty un-likeable character.” If Douglas enjoyed cultivating a real-life image of a ruthless tough guy driven by egomania, it served only to enhance his screen charisma in a series of memorable and sometimes monstrous roles that he summed up succinctly as “tough sons of bitches”.

With his barrel chest, chiselled jaw and famously dimpled chin, he was made to play virile, if not always likeable, all-action characters. The robust template was forged from the moment he slugged his way to stardom in the 1949 film ”Champion as a prize-fighter trampling all-comers.
