World Golf Championships in a brief history.
he World Golf Championships birth. At 1996 Presidents Cup, five golf world governing bodies reached an agreement. They were, the European Tour, Japan Golf Tour Organization, PGA Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia and Sunshine Tour. They agreed on several key elements of professional golf. They have been designated to create new international events, beginning in 1999.
Three major initiatives were outlined at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. It was the site of the second Presidents Cup. In fact, it was the constitution of the International Federation of PGA Tours. It had to be a structure for a generally accepted worldwide ranking system. Beside it had to join for sanctioning — by the new members of the International Federation of PGA Tours — significant competitions.They had to include some at the world championship level for the game’s top players.
These significant competitions were announced in October 1997. Then the Federation introduced World Golf Championships. It was developed to enhance the competitive structure of worldwide professional golf, while preserving the traditions and strengths of the individual Tours and events.
The first three jointly sanctioned championships.
The first three jointly sanctioned championships were, the Accenture Match Play Championship (Now The Matchplay), the NEC Invitational (now Bridgestone Invitational) and the American Express Championship (now Cadillac Championship). They were launched in 1999. Jeff Maggert won the first event and Tiger Woods the latter two. The addition of the World Cup was announced in December 1999. It was played as a World Golf Championships event from 2000-06. The 2008 season marked the 10th year of the series. Then the World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China, was added to the series.
The World Golf Championships’ events feature players from around the globe. They are competing against one another in varied formats. World Golf Championships’ events have been contested on five continents and in 10 countries. They also feature some of the largest purses in professional golf.
The Asian Tour joined the International Federation of PGA Tours as a full-fledged member in November 1999. The Canadian Tour was named an associate member in March 2000. The Tour of the Americas joined the Federation as an associate member in 2007.

In step with global growth of professional golf, the International Federation of PGA Tours announced an expansion and restructuring of its membership in June 2009. It included additional professional golf tours, as — for the first time — Women’s Golf Tours. As part of the restructure, the Canadian Tour and the Tour of the Americas became part of the full-fledged membership. And the following professional golf organizations became members of the International Federation of PGA Tours.They were China Golf Association, Korea Professional Golf Tour Corp, Professional Golf Tour of India, LPGA Tour, Ladies European Tour, Australian Ladies Professional Golf Tour, Japan LGA, Korean LPGA and Ladies Asian Golf Tour.
The operational aspects of the World Golf Championships will continue to be overseen by a committee. It is composed of the original members of the Federation. They were, Asian Tour, European Tour, Japan Golf Tour Organization, PGA TOUR, PGA Tour of Australasia and the Sunshine Tour.
Bridgestone, Cadillac and HSBC.
Bridgestone, Cadillac and HSBC are the umbrella sponsors of the World Golf Championships. Kohler and Rolex are official sponsors. Fields for the World Golf Championships are filled primarily through the Official World Golf Ranking. It is endorsed by all the sport’s major professional organizations and governing bodies. Also it includes individual Tours’ tournament winners and leaders of Tour Official Money Lists / Orders of Merit.
Last season, the World Golf Championships series began in November 2015 with the HSBC Champions at the Sheshan International Golf Club, Shanghai, China. In March, the Mexico Championship. In May, TPC Harding Park welcomes the Match Play, and World Golf Championships travel to Akron, OH, in August for the Bridgestone Invitational.
